The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is currently presenting "Silence, Exile & Cunning" through July 25. The exhibit, curated by Frances McCormack, finds the inspriation for its title in this quote by James Joyce from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: "I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can and as wholly as I can, using for my defense the only arms I allow myself to use- silence, exile and cunning." The exhibition brings together nine artists: Enrique Chagoya, Judith Foosaner, Robert Hartman, Miya Hannan, Paul Kos, Patsy Krebs, Brett Reichman, Josephine Taylor, and Larry Thomas. The work of these artists shows the kind of commitment to revealing certain aspects of silence, exile, or cunning that require a rare conviction and an intimate knowledge of their subject that can only suggest a sympathetic relation to Joyce's uncompromising stance.

From September 25 & 26, 2010, San Francisco Bay's Treasure Island plays host to the Fifth Annual Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival -- the largest such competition in the United States. For those unfamiliar with the sport, dragon boating simply put, is a boat of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steers person paddling to cross the finish faster than their competition. It's a team sport in its purest form that encompasses the elements of power, speed, synchronization and endurance. With its beginnings in Southern China, dragon boating today is the fastest growing international team water sport.
