Contra Costa Civic Theatre (CCCT) today announced the cast for its upcoming production of Humble Boy, directed by Ken Sonkin. Hailed in its recent London revival as "a modern classic", playwright Charlotte Jones' comedy of family dysfunction and theoretical physics plays February 15 through March 10 at CCCT. For tickets and information visit the theatre's website at www.ccct.org or call 510.524.9012.
The company of Humble Boy reunites Steve Rhyne as the brilliant, hapless Felix Humble and Scarlett Hepworth as his beautiful, domineering mother, Flora. Rhyne and Hepworth previously appeared together at CCCT in 2015's critically-acclaimed Doubt. Others in the cast include Caroline Schneider, last seen at CCCT in August: Osage County and American Idiot, and newcomers Li-Leng Au, Ron Talbot, and Russ Whismore.
The production's design team includes scenic designer Benicia Martinez, costume designer Iggy Carothers, lighting designer William Campbell, sound designer Michael Kelly, and props designer Devon LaBelle. Stage Manager for Humble Boy is Mackenzie Laurel Orvis.
All is not well in the Humble hive. Thirty-five-year-old Felix Humble is a Cambridge astrophysicist in search of a unified field theory, but after the sudden death of his father, James, a teacher and amateur beekeeper, he is forced to return to the family home in the English countryside. Once there he and his demanding mother, Flora, a glamorous former showgirl who resents having spent the last thirty years in suburban exile, attempt to reconcile themselves to James's death and to each other, plumbing the depths of their anger as well as their love. The emotional turmoil increases exponentially with the arrival of George, Flora's longtime lover, and his daughter Rosie, Felix's former girlfriend, as Felix is forced to acknowledge that his search for unity must include his own chaotic home life.
The Telegraph called the March 2018 London revival of Humble Boy "hilarious and humane" and "a modern classic"; Artsdesk.com added, "this show combines laugh-out-loud delights with a quietly moving ending"; and WhatsOnStage said, "It's a generous play, with hope in its heart, and it feels very good to spend an evening in its company."
Tickets for Humble Boy range from $11 to $32, with discounts available for groups of 15 or more. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. All performances take place at CCCT's intimate and fully accessible theatre in the Flynn building located at 951 Pomona Avenue (cross street Moeser) in El Cerrito. Free parking is available in the adjoining lot. Tickets may be purchased online at www.ccct.org or by phone at 510.524.9012.
