Broadway By the Bay, the Peninsula based award-winning musical theater company, announced today the four musicals that will make up their 2018 season. Launching the season in March 2018 will be the 1957 musical theater classic, The Music Man. Summer will kick off like a great ball of fire with the hit rock-n-roll musical Million Dollar Quartet, followed by the 70s disco-era hit Saturday Night Fever. The season will come to a close with Elton John and Tim Rice's Tony Award-winning adaptation of Verdi's AIDA. Season tickets are available now for renewing and new subscribers at www.broadwaybythebay.org/join or by calling (650) 579-5565.
Executive Artistic Director, Alicia Jeffrey, explains "We wanted a season that celebrates all that we love about the escapism of musicals-unbridled romance, thrilling dance, everlasting love, and above all else-iconic music. Whether it's from the pen of Meredith Wilson or The Bee Gees, the musicals this season will make you grove, swoon, and maybe even strut. We're thrilled to be returning to the historic Fox Theater-it's one of the crown jewels of Bay Area theaters, and we couldn't be more excited to bring this season to Peninsula audiences."
The season steps off March 16, 2018 with seventy-six trombones-and one fast-talking, smooth-as-silk salesman looking to score big in small-town Iowa in The Music Man. "Professor" Harold Hill shows up in River City with the hopes of scoring a profitable scam by convincing the townspeople that he can teach their children to play musical instruments. When the local librarian sees through his scheme, the bickering twosome find the last thing either expected-love. One of the most Popular Productions in Broadway By the Bay history, Meredith Wilson's six-time Tony Award-winning classic is the perfect way to kick off the season.
The summer heats up with Million Dollar Quartet. In December 1956, in a small Memphis recording studio, four icons of music met-and had a jam-session that changed rock-n-roll forever. This June, audiences will be front and center as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins turn the Fox Theatre into a historic night of music and soul in this Broadway smash.
In August, Broadway By the Bay audiences will get out their white disco suits and platform shoes for Saturday Night Fever, the thrilling musical based on the hit movie. Featuring over a dozen classic songs by the Bee-Gees, dazzling choreography, and groovy 70s costumes, you'll be hip-swerving and finger-pointing-in-the-aisles to this streetwise and heartfelt story of friendship, home, and risking it all for your passion.
November will see the final show of the season, the four-time Tony Award winner, Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida. In the time of Pharaohs, a beautiful Nubian princess is taken from her land. But when a bond between her and the future ruler of Egypt grows, loyalties are tested, and both must question their true heart's desire. From the Broadway legends that brought you The Lion King, Evita, and Billy Elliot comes this epic tale of love and courage.
