After many years Brava! For Women in the arts presents it's first musical. D'Arcy Drollinger's darkly comedic rock satire, Scalpel!, will run through April 17th. The organization is excited to produce such an ambitious project in its second year under a new artistic director, Raelle Myrick-Hodges. Scalpel! is written and directed by D'Arcy Drollinger with Music Direction by Scrumbly Koldewyn (The Cockettes, Angels of Light).
Workshopped in New York as part of the BMI Musical Theater Workshop and then in the New York Fringe Festival, Scalpel! finds it's home for the World Premiere in Brava. Drollinger, the show's creator, and a SF native, also comes home to direct his first show in San Francisco in over a decade.Imagine a world where Ivana Trump and Jocelyn Wildenstein enter The Matrix - where Dede Wilsey becomes Le Femme Nikita and "the ladies who lunch" moonlight as lethal assassins. Described as The Manchurian Candidate meets the Stepford Wives, Scalpel! cuts deep into two great American obsessions: beauty and conspiracy. A darkly comedic rock thriller, Scalpel! delights in a world where youth and perfection are the ultimate commodities- commodities worth killing for."If you have ever had the opportunity of seeing any of D'Arcy's other work including The Posession of Mrs. Jones, Pink Elephants or the infamous Shit & Champagne, you know you are going to be entertained immensely with a story that holds the weight of classic theatre structure. D'Arcy is simply damn funny. I wanted our second season to be fun! Scalpel! is a combination of what we all love of the cabaret scene and revere about professional theater." says Brava Artistic Director, Raelle Myrick-Hodges.
