"It is hard to believe that Bay Area Musicals is finally turning five years old," said Founding Artistic Director Matthew McCoy. "To celebrate this landmark anniversary, we wanted to program a season that really underscores our love for the remarkable evolution of the musical theatre art form. All four shows - from GYPSY to IN THE HEIGHTS - have shaped and transformed this craft of ours, and laid the groundwork for the creation of the innovative musicals that are lighting up Broadway today. And speaking of four shows, I am extremely excited to fulfill our audiences' request for more BAM productions by adding an additional show to the roster for the first time. The 2019-2020 season will be nothing less than spectacular, shining a spotlight once again on the incredible talent of our local designers, musicians and actors. We are so grateful to the Bay Area community for continuing to embrace our work - thank you for helping us make it to year five!"

Bay Area Musicals' 2019-2020 season features:

GYPSY
Music by Jule Styne
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by Arthur Laurents
Directed and Choreographed by Matthew McCoy
Music Direction by Jon Gallo
November 9 - December 8, 2019
Bay Area Musicals is pleased to open our fifth anniversary season with GYPSY, considered among critics and theater historians to be the best American Musical---EVER! GYPSY is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother." It follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage, and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The luscious and recognizable score includes "Everything's Coming up Roses", "Together (Wherever We Go)", "Small World", "You Gotta Get a Gimmick", "Let Me Entertain You", "All I Need Is the Girl", and "Rose's Turn." Resident Music Director Jon Gallo will be arranging and gathering the top orchestral talents for the largest orchestra Bay Area Musicals has ever had. Come to the theater and let us 'entertain you'!

THE FULL MONTY

Based on the beloved cult film of the same name, the 10-time Tony Award-nominated musical THE FULL MONTY is filled with honest affection, engaging melodies and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show. The powerhouse team of Terrence McNally (RAGTIME) and David Yazbek (THE BAND'S VISIT) cooks up an electrifying book and score that rocks with soul and still has plenty of heart. Right to the end, everyone will be cheering on this misfit group of men as they shed their inhibitions and exhibit their naked drive to achieve their goal. Perfect for a guys' or girls' night out, all of San Francisco will be flocking to Bay Area Musicals' must-see THE FULL MONTY this winter!

A CHORUS LINE

Music Direction by Jon Gallo
April 11 - May 10, 2020
*Conceived and originally directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett
Bay Area Musicals is proud to offer a spring production for the first time, as part of our fifth anniversary season. Perhaps more than any other show, the 9-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical A CHORUS LINE is a living testament to the heart, hard work, passion, dedication and sacrifice demanded by a life in show business. Memorable musical numbers include "What I Did for Love, "One," "I Can Do That," "At the Ballet," "The Music and the Mirror," and "I Hope I Get It." A brilliantly complex fusion of song, dance, and compellingly-authentic drama, A CHORUS LINE was instantly recognized as a classic upon its premiere in 1975. Bay Area favorite Christina Lazo will be recreating the iconic choreography by the legendary Michael Bennett. Join us for this timeless celebration of the unsung heroes of musical theatre: the chorus dancers.

IN THE HEIGHTS
Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda

Direction and Choreographed by Alex Rodriguez
Music Direction by Jon Gallo
July 11 - August 9, 2020
Bay Area Musicals will close the fifth anniversary season with this Tony Award-winning Best Musical, created by the genius team behind HAMILTON. IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood - a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It is a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures - a neighborhood where the biggest struggles can decide which traditions you keep and which ones you leave behind. Directed by Theatre Bay Area (TBA) Award-winner Alex Rodriguez, IN THE HEIGHTS will be a hot summer smash. Bring the entire family and be swept away by the intoxicating Latin music of this groundbreaking masterpiece.

Cast and creative teams for all productions will be announced at a later date. Subscriptions are available now at www.bamsf.org.
