BLUES IS A WOMAN celebrates women in the blues from Ma Rainey to Bonnie Raitt and beyond. Fired up after a round of sold-out previews in Northern California (Kuumbwa, Freight & Salvage, SFJAZZ, Cinnabar Theater) in which audiences leapt to their feet with mid-show standing ovations, this new theater/concert piece will have a month long theatrical run at Custom Made Theatre in San Francisco.

With a powerful ensemble of musician/actors (Pamela Rose, Tammy Hall, Ruth Davies, Pat Wilder, Daria Johnson and Kristen Strom), the women onstage perform musical treasures punctuated by storytelling and rare historical film. The work shines a light on Black experience, how it informed all American music, and follows the fierce, passionate women who popularized the Blues. The audience is transported back to the early roots of America's most enduring art form, and travel through the decades in a vibrant explosion of concert and history.

BLUES IS A WOMAN was written by San Francisco musician Pamela Rose, with creative direction by Jayne Wenger. This co-production with Custom Made Theatre is the official theatrical debut of Rose's compelling new piece, a hybrid of theater and concert. The show will run from Thursdays through Sundays throughout the month of August.

BLUES IS A WOMAN is the latest in Rose's Wild Women of Song project, which gives voice to remarkable women in American music. Rose's previous piece "Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era" toured nationally for six years to critical acclaim.
