Critics and audiences greeted Tony Kushner's ANGELS IN AMERICA with superlatives when this Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning play first opened nearly twenty five years ago. The AIDS epidemic and the age of Ronald Reagan provide the framework for this compelling story of people and society responding to the forces of change. Within the political and social upheaval of the era, the play presents an astounding view of relationships under extreme stress and the triumph of the human spirit. Foothill Theatre Arts will present ANGELS IN AMERICA, directed by Bruce McLeod, for three weeks only, May 29 through June 14, at the Lohman Theatre, on the Foothill College campus (at the bottom of the hill), 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.
ANGELS IN AMERICA is written in two parts. Foothill will present a full staging of Part One: Millennium Approaches and a companion reading-only of Part Two: Perestroika. This new version of the play, streamlined by Kushner for a 2014 production, is a fantastic journey anchored by two couples. Joe, a lawyer and republican, can't reconcile his attraction to men with his Mormon faith, while his wife Harper fantasizes of another life while high on valium. Prior is a young man dealing with an AIDS infection as his lover Louis is struggling with his ability to be his caregiver as the disease progresses. The ability of these and other characters to adapt as the social and political landscape around them dramatically shifts provides the real power of the play. For this production, director Bruce McLeod has assembled a cast of that includes veteran local actors and exciting new talent. The roles in Part One: Millennium Approaches will be played by: Alex Perez (as Roy Cohn), Dan Martin (as Joe Pitt), Sophia Naylor (as Harper Pitt), Carla Befera (as Hannah Pitt - note: Marley Wesley will perform this role on 6/13 & 6/14), Tim Garcia (as Prior Walter), Clinton Williams (as Louis Ironson), Davied Morales (as Belize), Layla Salazar (as The Angel) and an ensemble including Brittany Pisoni, Seamus O'Connell, Giovanni Maciel, and Rozlyn MacDermott.
Audiences are advised that both parts contain strong language along with mature sexual themes, and may not be appropriate for those under 16.
