This August, American Conservatory Theater's Young Conservatory (YC) will present Homefront, a passionate and powerful musical that tells the story of remarkable young people courageously struggling to come of age in a world rocked by conflict. Emma Kolmeier and her two young siblings flee from Germany to escape World War I, leaving everything they know far behind. The family settles in southern Illinois, where they make new friends-but also begin to confront harsh persecution as America enters the war against Germany. As they experience the first twinges of romance and dream of the future, their lives are transformed in astonishing ways, forever redefining their understanding of home. Homefront was the first commissioned musical for the Young Conservatory and received its world premiere in June 2011.

Young actors from throughout the Bay Area (and often other states) who attend the Young Conservatory develop their creative talent, perform in professional-caliber productions, and learn confidence and communication skills.
The Young Conservatory offers dynamic courses throughout the year for both beginners exploring acting for the first time as well as young actors with previous experience. Classes are designed to develop imagination, concentration, character, professionalism, and technique, and to strengthen the student's command of his/her body and voice.
Focusing on the creation of high-quality new works for young actors by celebrated playwrights, the Young Conservatory's Grace McGill New Plays Program, created in 1989, has enlisted a long list of professional playwrights to create new works for young actors. They include Ursula Rani Sarma (A Thousand Splendid Suns),
Timothy Mason,
Constance Congdon,
Sarah Daniels, and
Mark Ravenhill.
