More than 6,000 people marched and rallied in San Francisco on the evening of January 20 protesting Donald Trump's elevation to the presidency and the ultra-reactionary agenda of the new administration. The spirited marchers were not deterred by an opening rally downpour and intermittent rain along the 4-mile route which began at UN Plaza. The march culminated a day of actions across the Bay Area and the country protesting Trump's inauguration.

Tens of thousands came to Washington DC to inaugurate the resistance to Trump's ultra-right wing, pro-Wall Street agenda. Thousands filled the Navy Memorial along the inaugural parade route, in a protest organized by the ANSWER - Act Now to Stop War and End Racism - Coalition.

Among the speakers at the opening rally were Anand Singh, president of UNITE HERE Local 2; Gloria La Riva, Peace & Freedom Party & Party for Socialism and Liberation; Tim Paulson, Executive Director of the San Francisco Labor Council; Guillermina Castellanos, Jobs with Justice and the California Domestic Workers Coalition; MeghAnn Adams, WORD-Women Organized to Resist & Defend; and Richard Becker of the ANSWER Coalition, which was the central organizer of the demonstration.

In a gross undercount, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that just 1,000 joined the march and rally. Three experienced activists, acting independently, reported counting between 5,500 and 6,000 in the march on Market St. between Valencia and Sanchez Sts. Several hundred other people attended the opening rally but did not march.

TV stations KPIX and KTVU both reported "thousands" marching in San Francisco Friday evening.
