Celebrate an evening of Pinoy Jazz as the San Francisco Filipino American Jazz Festival presents an extraordinary lineup of artists at their 3rd Annual Concert. The SFFAJF is honored to present award-winning and show-stopping composer/pianist/vocalist, Primo Kim with special guest vocalist, Jo Canion; world-renowned performing and recording artist, and Tokyo's premiere jazz diva, Charito; and hailing from Manila, enchanting and powerful singer, Sandra Viray.
Providing musical support for the evening are established members of the San Francisco/Bay Area jazz community-pianist, Jeff Chin and his Trio with bassist Ron Belcher and drummer Mark Lee. The horn section will feature saxophonist Melecio Magdaluyo and Al Molina on trumpet and fluglehorn. Performing with Primo Kim and Jo Canion will be long time musical collaborators and friends, bassist Frank Passantino, drummer Buddy Barnhill, and pianist, Larry Chinn.
The roots of Pinoy Jazz in the SF/Bay Area can be traced to early Filipino immigrants who settled in and around the Fillmore District, the Tenderloin, and Manilatown on Kearny Street next to Chinatown. Jazz pioneers such as Flip Nuñez, Jo Canion, and Rudy Tenio created a legacy which many artists have since followed. Today, Pinoy jazz is gaining wider recognition as artists like Primo Kim, Charito, Sandra Viray, Mon David, Tateng Katindig, John Calloway, John Irabagon, Victor Noriega, and Charmaine Clamor are recording and performing to audiences world-wide.
