Performing with other musicians and groups such as Mick Jagger, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, G3, Sammy Hagar and others, SATRIANI was inspired to play guitar at age 14 after hearing of the death of Jimi Hendrix. One year later he was teaching guitar in New York and fellow Long Island native Steve Vai was one of his most notable early students. Continuing his teaching after a move to California, he formed the pop band The Squares and was then invited to join the Greg Kihn Band. His album release Surfing with the Alien (1987) produced radio hits and was the first all-instrumental release to chart so highly in many years, quickly going both gold and platinum. Tours with Mick Jagger (1988) and Deep Purple (1993), multiple album releases and the founding of G3, a concert tour featuring a trio of guitarists, and his participation with other guitarists in the Experience Hendrix Tribute Tour are just a few of his other stellar accomplishments in the music world.
His masterful performance techniques on electric guitar, including legato, two-handed tapping and arpeggio tapping, volume swells, harmonics and extreme whammy bar effects are a few examples of the influence on his play by guitar icons Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck and Allan Holdsworth. SATRIANI has received 15 Grammy nominations and has sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
