Join Bach Collegium San Diego for J.S. Bach’s vivid musical account of Christ's passion, which combines a striking drama and devotion forming a pinnacle of the vocal works composed for the Leipzig churches.
Bach's St. Matthew Passion was written for the Good Friday Vespers service of 1727 at the St Thomas' Church Leipzig and brings together relevant themes of betrayal, judgment, death, and love as expressed through St. Matthew's Gospel and Bach's librettist Picander.
Soloists include Aaron Sheehan, Evangelist; Clara Rottsolk, Soprano; Estelí Gomez, Soprano; Virginia Warnken, Mezzo-Soprano; Jay Carter, Countertenor; Paul Max Tipton (Christus), Bass-Baritone; Enrico Lagasca (Pilatus), Bass-Baritone.
Bach Collegium San Diego engages audiences with accessible, historically informed performances and educational programs featuring repertoire from the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical eras. The ensemble was founded in 2003 by Music Director Ruben Valenzuela to diversify the musical offerings of the San Diego community.
