Artistic Director, Carlos Mendoza, has just announced the list of "divas" set to perform for Starlight's "Divas Do Broadway" benefit concert on Saturday, September 11 at the Starlight bowl. The list includes both Broadway and Starlight stars, as well as other Californian favorites. Song selections will be performed from Broadway hit shows such "Evita", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Wizard of Oz", "Follies", "Cats", "Little Shop of Horrors", "Phantom of the Opera", "Follies", "Annie", "Sweeney Todd" and many more during the two hour concert.

The list of 17 extraordinary women include Starlight and San Diego stars Bets Malone, Melinda Gilb and Eileen Bowman; Broadway and National touring stars Kim Huber, Karyn Overstreet and Susan De Leon; as well as other Starlight and California stars Rae Henderson, Katie Wilson, Crissy Guerrero, Judy Mora, Debbie Prutsman, Karenssa LeGear, Danielle Forsgren, Debbie Prutsman, Alexis Grenier, Jennifer Wilcove, and Arianna Afsar.

When asked about Starlight's benefit concert, Mr. Mendoza exclaimed, "This is an amazing night to see some of California's best talent come together on our stage. There's nothing better to me than hearing phenomenal women belt out Broadway. As the lyrics of South Pacific go, ‘There is nothing like a dame', I have to completely agree! I hope we sell out this wonderful concert - it's a beautiful evening out under the stars for our guests and more importantly one to help benefit Starlight's ongoing operations into our 65th year."

Ticket prices for the event are two-tiered, $45 for front and $25 for rear, in the 4,200 seat theatre. All proceeds from the evening will benefit 64 year old Starlight Musical Theatre. In fact, all unions associated with the theatre, AEA (Actors Union), IATSE Local 122 (Stagehands Union) and Musicians Union Local 325 (Orchestra), have agreed to donate their time towards the cause of raising funds for Starlight. Of course in these economic times of decreased donations and sponsorships, Starlight has had to resort to surviving mainly on ticket sales alone, a feat that any arts organization knows is virtually impossible. This event will help to decrease the budgetary gap that almost all are feeling and ensuring its continued survival for years to come.

Located in beautiful Balboa Park, Starlight Musical Theatre has been a unique San Diego tradition for 64 years. Starlight audiences can enjoy top notch San Diego professionals while sitting under the stars in a 4,200-seat outdoor amphitheatre. Built for the 1935-1936 California-Pacific Exposition, the Starlight Bowl became the home of Starlight Musical Theatre in 1946. Since that time, Starlight has presented over 133 musicals and is one of the oldest continuously-producing musical theatre companies in the United States.
