After a combined 120 performances with Season 1 and Season 2 BEYOND BABEL is announcing its final San Diego performance on March 30. Home-grown in San Diego, the acclaimed immersive dance show will end its second San Diego run to go on an international tour and open off-Broadway in early 2020. Due to popular demand the producers created a second season in 2019 at the downtown Beyond Babel theater.
BEYOND BABEL was named top "18 Things We Loved in the San Diego Arts Scene in 2018" by The San Diego Union Tribune. The production is told entirely through the style of West Coast Urban Dance in their purpose-built theater space, called the Beyond Babel Theater (2625 Imperial Avenue, San Diego CA 92102), near Petco Park San Diego. . The show's creators and producers designed this new immersive space and will leave it for others to imagine their own creative theater production. There is limited theater space in San Diego, and this is a re-imagined space given back to the community for future possible theatrical productions to flourish.
Before BEYOND BABEL heads to off Broadway in NYC, there could be "pop-up" shows in LA, Toronto and other cities. There are so many fans of the production. One San Diego theater lover has seen it 30-times over the course of both seasons. Season 1 of BEYOND BABEL opened on September 21st, 2018 with a closing before Christmas. Season 2 (reimagined with new music, moves, lighting and beautiful set crochet) opened on February 1st, 2019.
BEYOND BABEL is a critically acclaimed theatrical dance show created by Keone & Mari Madrid and Hideaway Circus. BEYOND BABEL is inspired by the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet and current social stories from all over the world. The show is set to a contemporary soundtrack and is about the division of families, friends, and a community of people as authorities decide to build a wall between them. The audience follows two divinely linked lovers as they reconcile with the rising tensions of a populace cut in half. It featured new large crochet backdrops, art installations, and yarn-based props by acclaimed artist London Kaye.
Keone and Mari Madrid, San Diego residents, are the co-creators, directors, and choreographers of BEYOND BABEL. They are dancers and award-winning choreographers, storytellers and creatives, global instructors and most importantly husband and wife. Notable work includes: starring in and choreographing for Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" music video, NBC's World Of Dance, BTS, "The Ellen Show," "So You Think You Can Dance," Flying Lotus & Kendrick Lamar, "Dancing With the Stars," nominations for best choreography at the MTV Video Music Awards and the UK Video Music Awards, Nike, Timbaland, Beats By Dre, Nordstrom, Hyundai, SKY: A 3D Musical, several Kpop artists, viral videos, multiple champions at major dance competitions and more. Their Youtube videos have viewed over 2 billion times. Most recently, Keone and Mari published "Ruth" the first ever dance book, a multi-media experience combining dance, writing, illustration, music and video, which debuted top 8 on iBooks and Google Play.
Josh Aviner and Lyndsay Magid Aviner are the Brooklyn based production company Hideaway Circus. They are the lead producers and co-creators of BEYOND BABEL. It will be their third live theatrical collaboration with Keone and Mari Madrid. Their previous live shows together were a genre-defying slasher circus show titled SLUMBER, and described by Time Out NY as "contemporary, sexy and a little bit dangerous." The production played for multiple seasons in New York and Australia. In February of 2018, they released the first ever circus and dance show designed specifically for viewing in virtual reality. Their other live productions The Miss Behave Gameshow is now playing at Bally's Casino in Las Vegas. Josh and Lyndsay also host the award-nominated Hideaway Podcast, a podcast where they discuss current circus and theatre news and interview artists and entrepreneurs in the industry.
"We could not have been more thrilled to be bring BEYOND BABEL and open it in San Diego," said Josh Aviner. "The local San Diego support of the show has been overwhelming and we are grateful."
"We hope everyone in San Diego can come and see it in the final coming weeks," said Lyndsay Magid Aviner. "Thanks to demand and popularity, we got to have a Season 2 production of BEYOND BABEL and enhance the production and audience experience. This show has so much heart and we look forward to its next journey - but we will always be grateful to San Diego and the audiences for the support we received from the community."
