The BALBOA THEATRE 2010-11 Season:

Be ready to be wowed with rich Indian dance styles of bellydancing as Bellydance Superstars presents BOMBAY BELLYWOOD for one hot afternoon only ~ Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 3PM, when a different kind of undulation will vibrate the Balboa Theatre. As their recent KPBS special demonstrated, BOMBAY BELLYWOOD merges inspired traditional and Tribal Bellydance with Indian dance styles rich in ornate costuming, visual excitement and emotive, infectious music. The Bellydance Superstars mark their 7th year of international touring with this all new show that pushes the boundaries of the art of Bellydance. This time they go even further - adding the first male dancer Samir (recently seen in Cirque du Soleil' ‘O' in Las Vegas); and Meera, one of the most respected bellydancers in America who is well versed in Indian dance styles. Bellydance in its varied forms will, of course, remain central to the show. The cast also features San Diego native Kami Liddle, Petite Jamilla, Stefanya, Sabah, Sabrina Fox, Nathalie, Lauren, April Rose, Moria Chappell, Colleen, and Issam Houshan.

4TROOPS salutes Americans rich heritage of defending their country at the Balboa Theatre on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 7:30PM, as featured in their KPBS special. Four powerful American voices come together for one important cause--to support active military members and American veterans and honor their sacrifices through song. 4TROOPS are United States combat veterans who served on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan ~ former Sgt. Daniel Jens, former Capt. Meredith Melcher, Staff Sgt. (Retired) Ron Henry & former Sgt. David Clemo. While overseas, music played a crucial and very personal role in all of their lives. They sang at large military events and more intimate settings, jamming in their bunk after a long day in the field to try to recall a slice of home. They also used their voices at somber memorial services to remember those that had been lost. 4TROOPS now come together for a singular purpose: to sing on behalf of all troops, to honor their sacrifices and to create awareness for their needs. $1.00 from EVERY ticket sold for this event will be donated, in full, to the following organizations: USO, Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) and the American Legion.

Get ready to be brought to your feet as DRUMLINE LIVE comes to the Balboa Theatre on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 7:30PM. DRUMLINE LIVE features a 39-member cast of high-energy performers in the show-style marching band tradition of America's top Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The versatile group of musicians and dancers bring an explosive energy and athleticism to an eclectic mix of sounds. Equally at home with the hottest contemporary hip hop, R&B, classic Motown tunes, and the rousing sounds of the great brass tradition, DRUMLINE LIVE is thrilled to share the American Marching Band experience with a wider audience.

Don't miss An Evening with JOAN RIVERS as the irreverent, outspoken force of nature takes over the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 8PM. Joan Rivers is one of the hardest-working celebrities in the world. An entertainment legend of unparalleled accomplishment and talent, she's an internationally renowned comedienne, Emmy-winning television talk show host, Tony®-nominated actress, best-selling author, playwright, screenwriter, motion picture director, columnist, lecturer, syndicated radio host, jewelry designer and cosmetic company entrepreneur, red carpet fashion laureate, businesswoman -- and most importantly, a proud mother and grandmother. Joan Rivers has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning more than four decades in the entertainment industry and beyond she's as robust and hard-working as ever. A night full of laughs, guaranteed!

The Russians return ~ by popular demand! The RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET THEATRE prepares us for Valentine's day with a two-day program of romance and enchantment at the Balboa Theatre; presenting Romeo & Juliet on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 8PM and Cinderella on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 2PM. Love fills the air in Romeo & Juliet's timeless tale of love and sacrifice in a full-length Ballet with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikowski, original choreography by Marius Petipa, restaged by Yuri Vetrov. The enduring rivalry between the Montague and Capulet families forbids the blissful love blossoming between the Montague son Romeo and Capulet daughter Juliet, to tragic results.

Under the artistic direction of former legendary Bolshoi dancer Sergei Radchenko, Prokofiev's masterpiece Cinderella remains an enchanting fairy tale of everlasting love. This beloved classic is overflowing with lyrical romance and dramatic grandeur. With a company of 50 dancers, including a large corps de ballet, the Russian National Ballet Theatre has focused on upholding the grand tradition of major Russian ballet works.

Two-time Grammy nominee and one of Australia's most respected musicians, An Evening with TOMMY EMMANUEL comes to the Balboa Theatre on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 7:30PM. The legendary guitarist has a unique "finger style" akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers; including melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts played on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins inspired him to try this style as a child, and decades later became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans. Numerous honors include induction into the National Thumbpickers' Hall of Fame (the only non-American ever); he was named Thumbpicker of the Year in 2005 & 2009. He played Carnegie Hall for Les Paul's 90th birthday Tribute Concert. In 2009, his solo album and DVD Center Stage video was featured on PBS stations; he received Guitar Player Magazine's Guitar Legend award; and their Readers Choice awards named him Best Acoustic Guitarist in 2008 and 2010. Guitar players of all levels come to watch the magic hands of the 'guitar Wizard of Oz,' but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. His live shows are known for their humor, passion, and infectious joy. The power of his charismatic showmanship will be an enduring part of Emmanuel's legacy. Tommy Emmanuel's message is pure love for the music and his delight in sharing it with the world, one audience at a time. Tickets for An Evening with Tommy Emmanuel are currently exclusively available to supporters of KPBS-TV, and will be released for general sale later this fall.

An Evening With JOE BONAMASSA brings a totally different guitar discipline to the Balboa Theatre on Friday, February 18 at 8PM. Bonamassa has earned his reputation as one of the world's greatest guitar players, while evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is transformational, and his new album, Black Rock, brings that energy to his recorded music more powerfully than ever before. The tenth solo album and eighth studio release of his career - as well as his fifth consecutive with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, etc.) - the disc adds an enlivening dose of ‘world' vibes to Bonamassa's virtuoso mix of ‘60s-era British blues-rock (à la Beck and Clapton) and roots-influenced Delta sounds. Recent honors include a 2009 Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the UK's prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards¸ Guitar Player Magazine's Best Blues Guitarist in the 2009 Readers' Choice Awards, and in 2010 Guitar World dubbed him "The Blues Rock Titan."

The music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Erskine Hawkins, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, and other greats of the 1940's will get your toes tapping in the Big Band Theatrical Swing Revue IN THE MOOD at the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 2PM. This retro look at the life and time of America's greatest generation is a phenomenon now in its 17th year of touring. It's adored by Swing aficionados, especially seniors who heard the music first hand; but this is a family show for all ages - even young kids who love to swing dance flock to see it! The company of 19 ~ the In the Mood Singers and Dancers and the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra ~ music arrangements, costumes and choreography are as authentic as it gets! IN THE MOOD was conceived and created by musical producer, Bud Forrest.

You don't have to go to Nevada to see the woman voted "Best Comedian in Las Vegas" by the Las Vegas Review-Journal for the last eight years and respected as one of the cleanest comics working today, as An Evening With Rita Rudner brings the hilarity to the Balboa Theatre on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30PM. A favorite guest on David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Bill Maher, Jay Leno and all the talk shows; Rita has 3 highly acclaimed HBO specials; her BBC TV show also appeared on A&E; Las Vegas saw her first syndicated daily TV show "Ask Rita"; and her "Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas" was a ratings standout for PBS stations across the US. She has performed SRO tours from Carnegie Hall to Universal Amphitheatre, and fromAustralia and England. Rita has written four books, and collaborated with writer/producer husband Martin Bergman on the movie Peter's Friends, which won the Peter Seller's award for best comedy film of the year.

OPOLE, PHILHARMONIC OF POLAND brings their VIENNA GALA Program, featuring violinist Marta Kowalczyk and soprano Iwona Sobotka, to the Balboa Theatre on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3PM. Founded in 1947, the Opole, Philharmonic of Poland became resident Orchestra of Opole, winning the State Award for Arts Excellence in honor of the great Polish Composer Jósef Elsner in 1969. The Orchestra has participated regularly in prestigious Polish cultural events and has toured extensively, performing music of contemporary Polish composers to great critical and popular acclaim. Since 1999, under Maestro Boguslaw Dawidow, Music Director and Principal Conductor, the Opole has hosted a continually growing number of world-famous musicians, winners of international piano, violin and conducting competitions; and was the only Polish Orchestra invited to participate in the Gala Concert in Rome to mark the 80th birthday of Pope John Paul II in May 2000.

The legendary actor and his muse ~ Hal Holbrook's MARK TWAIN TONIGHT! opened the historic Balboa Theatre as its first SRO evening, and we couldn't resist the requests for the literary giant's return!

The Wall Street Journal said "Written in 1954 and last seen on Broadway 28 years ago, ‘Mark Twain Tonight!' remains to this day the most admired of all one man shows." The legendary Hal Holbrook will inhabit America's favorite raconteur once again in a return to the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, March 19 at 8PM with his Mark Twain Tonight! A living, breathing, American masterpiece! It is, quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring performances in the history of theatre. Nearly 50 years ago, a young actor took the stage in a tiny off-Broadway theatre and introduced the world to a man they'd never forget. The actor was Hal Holbrook. The man was Mark Twain. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called it "Remarkably fresh and topical! As politically of the moment as Al Franken and Bill Maher, Holbrook has tailored his Mark Twain handbook of quotes and set pieces to focus on the corruption and fabrications of politicians and journalists, subjects that alas seem excruciatingly relevant just now. His performance is perhaps most remarkable for the energy it derives from a studied languor, as Holbrook's Twain is a master of theatrical passive aggression. Holbrook must have been about 40 when this critic, as a little boy in Winston-Salem, first saw him in ‘Mark Twain Tonight!' ... I thought he was just wonderful then. To my surprise, I still do."
