The holiday season - and the San Diego Symphony's special holiday concert calendar - are quickly approaching. Check out the listings below!
DECEMBER CONCERTS
SUN DEC 2 | MOZART AND DVORAK
Johannes Debus, conductor
Jeff Thayer, violin
The unique commissioned work that opens this program brings together Mexican composer Javier
Witold Lutos?awski wrote his charming Polish folk music-based Little Suite in response to criticism of his First Symphony as being "too modern." Antonín Dvo?ák's Sixth Symphony brought him international recognition, and shows his developed style following German traditional form infused with Czech folk melodies. Concertmaster Jeff Thayer performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's final violin concerto, which contains a hint of international influence in the final movement.
THU DEC 6 | RUSH HOUR 2.0: BAROQUE AND THE MANDOLIN
Johannes Debus, conductor
Avi Avital, mandolin
Renowned artist Avi Avital is featured on this program that celebrates the Baroque and one of Antonio Vivaldi's best-known concertos from The Four Seasons. Note: This "Rush Hour 2.0" concert begins at 6:30pm and runs less than 90 minutes with no intermission.
FRI DEC 7 | SAT DEC 8 | VIVALDI AND BACH WITH AVI AVITAL
Johannes Debus, conductor
Avi Avital, mandolin
Renowned artist Avi Avital performs two well-known Baroque concertos on the mandolin in his Jacobs Masterworks debut with the San Diego Symphony. The juxtaposition of baroque with Russian masterworks, including tributes by Anton Arensky and Igor Stravinsky to Piotr Tchaikovsky, creates a rich textural contrast.
FRI DEC 14 | LOVE ACTUALLY IN CONCERT
George Stelluto, conductor
A modern holiday classic featuring ten interlocking stories of love set around Christmastime, Love Actually contains clever dialogue, huge laughs, a big heart and one of the most amazing casts ever assembled, many of whom are now, 15 years later, household names.
