Following our "no one saw us coming" sleeper hit (Angela's Dream) in SDFF2013, Kata's ARTburlesque presents Courtesan Café (premiere), set in 1913 Cafe de Paris. The obsessive, sometimes funny, story of Pigalle and his well-drawn stable (so he thinks) of women: Meet Coco Chanel, Camille Claudel and Colette, in their dance with love, ambition, betrayal and lust. Choices and consequences. A powerhouse dramedy of adult cabaret/contemporary modern/butoh in a cheeky venue! Adult scenes. (18+) $10 ticket includes French Buffet and free admission to post-show Les Girls. Inspired by Kata's "Lenora" - winner of NYC Madeline Sadin Award for a Female Poet.
About Director/ProducerKata Pierce-Morgan, Poet/Dancer/SD activist, in her linked true-story productions -Story of Memorie (2012), Mystery of Elle (2013), Angela's Dream (2013)- places the fickle heart of SD politics, as she lived it, into the sexy lace of iconic Les Girls, for over 40 years a geiger counter for the good, the bad and the beautiful-ugly of this City's bureaucratic shakers and sexy movers. A theatrical risk-taker, Kata's ARTburlesque with its plot/character-driven gestalt (the whole is something other/greater than the sum of its parts) presents an avant-garde mix of Cabaret, Contemporary Modern and American Butoh, collaborating with some of San Diego's top creative artists in all genres to set the foundation for her adults-only shows, which, according to fans, serve an adult-themed aphrodisiac, with shades of Cabaret Voltaire, David Lynch, and Toulouse.
San Diego International Fringe Festival is a project of Contact Arts, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2003 along with Actors Alliance of San Diego with the purpose building a network of creativity & communication. Contact Arts & AASD aim to connect ideas with social action through progressive performance & community engaged projects.
