The Fabulous Thunderbirds bring their Austin Roadhouse sound to Poway OnStage for a one night only performance on January 21, 2017 at 8:00pm.
With their fusion of blues and rock & roll, the Fabulous Thunderbirds helped popularize Texas roadhouse blues with a mass following in the 1980s. In 1986, the band reached a commercial peak with the album,Tuff Enuff. The single "Tuff Enuff," as well as the singles "Wrap It Up" and "Look at That," all went top 40.
American blues rock guitarist and singer, Jimmie Vaughan, older brother of late Texas blues guitar player, Stevie Ray Vaughan, formed the Fabulous Thunderbirds along with singer and harpist, Kim Wilson, in 1974. Jimmie Vaughan eventually left the band to play in a duo with his brother. The five current band members are Kim Wilson, lead vocal and harmonica; Johnny Moeller, guitar; Steve Gomes, bass; Kevin Anker, keyboards; and Rob Stupka, drums.
Wilson, the sole original member, recalls, "We started as a straight blues band. We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We're an American music band and we're much higher energy than we were before." The band incorporated more Cajun, rock & roll, and soul. Muddy Waters callEd Wilson his favorite harmonica player and vocalist. "Muddy Waters was very good to me," Wilson says. "He almost adopted me. I'll never forget him." Turning to today's band, Wilson comments, "To be in the T-Birds, you need to understand the different styles of music and different ways of playing. You have to be willing to adopt a more contemporary style. The guys we have now are able to do that."
