New Village Arts will be presenting the San Diego Premiere of Jamie Pachino's award-winning play WAVING GOODBYE. Originally produced at Steppenwolf Theatre, WAVING GOODBYE was named the Best New Work in Chicago in 2002, and has won numerous other awards. The production is directed by NVA Ensemble Member Dana Case and features Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner, Ensemble Members Amanda Morrow and Rachael VanWormer and Jeffrey Jones and Kyle Lucy. WAVING GOODBYE will be playing at New Village Arts Theatre (2787 State Street, Carlsbad Village) from January 13 - February 6, 2010. The official opening night is January 15 at 8 PM. Jamie Pachino is an award winning playwright and screenwriter. Her work has been produced in four countries, commissioned, published and honored. In recent years, Pachino has been named the winner of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays production grant, the Laurie Foundation Theatre Visionary Award, Chicago's Joseph Jefferson ("Jeff") Award for Best New Work, the Pinter Prize Gold Medal for Drama, and this year's Francesca Primus Prize by the American Theatre Critics Association, among many others. Her plays have been nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and Illinois Governor's Award, and named Runner-up for the Osborn Award (American Theater Critics Association) and Jane Chambers Award. Pachino's plays have been produced and developed by such theatres as Steppenwolf, Long Wharf, Hartford Stage, American Conservatory Theatre, San Jose Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Geva, Northlight, Florida Stage, A Contemporary Theatre, and the Women's Playwright Conference in Athens, Greece. She currently serves on the faculty of the University of California at Irvine, and previously held positions with Northwestern University (her alma mater), Columbia College, National Louis University, and the Chicago Academy for the Arts in Chicago.
As a screenwriter, Pachino has written features for DreamWorks, Disney, Vanguard Films, Walden Media, and Smith/Hemion, and teleplays for Lifetime Television and the HallMark Hall of Fame. Other film scripts have been optioned by Greenestreet, Hearst, Trigger Street Films, and Lions Gate. She is a proud member of the WGA, and the International Center for Women Playwrights and is represented by Evolution Entertainment.
Director Dana Case is an Ensemble Member at New Village Arts, where she has directed some of NVA's most successful productions, including Crimes of the Heart and Picasso at the Lapin Agile. She also works frequently on the NVA stage as an actor, in such plays as Summer and Smoke, Be Aggressive and The Waverly Gallery. Case received an MFA from Cornell University, and is a member of SAG.The cast includes NVA Ensemble Members Kristianne Kurner, Amanda Morrow and Rachael VanWormer with Jeffrey Jones and Kyle Lucy. Kurner (Amanda Blue) is the co-founder and Executive Artistic Director of New Village Arts, where she has appeared in numerous shows including the title role in The Heidi Chronicles and as Germaine in Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Morrow (Perry Marshall) most recently appeared at NVA in Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Be Aggressive. VanWormer is recognized as one of the most exciting young actors in San Diego and was awarded the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor for her work in ion theatre's Bash, and is nominated for the same award this year for Diversionary Theatre's Speech and Debate. She has appeared with NVA in such productions as This is Our Youth and Things We Want. Jones is recognized as one of San Diego's finest actors and has appeared at NVA in The Waverly Gallery and most recently received great critical acclaim for his role in Frankie and Johnny at ion theatre. Lucy appeared with NVA as the Steward in Into the Woods and Schmendimann in Picasso at the Lapin Agile.
NVA has assembled some of the most exciting designers in San Diego, who will transform the stage each night from a run-down New York City loft into a work of art. Ensemble Member Tim Wallace will be designing the set and Kate Stallons will be creating the costumes. Christopher Loren Renda will make his NVA debut as a lighting designer and Ensemble Member Bonnie Durben will be creating the artistic props. Trevor Stucky serves as the Stage Manager.
