Some of the area's finest jazz musicians turn North Coast Rep into a nightclub. Come and hear some great American music played by brilliant players. On September 19, Bob Boss and his fellow musicians: Gilbert Castellanos, Dean Hulett and Richard Sellers will take the stage at North Coast Rep. at 7:30pm
Bob Boss an outstanding guitarist who has performed with jazz greats including Marshall Hawkins, Hollis Gentry, AJ Croce, and Arlo Guthrie, started playing rock & roll (starting in junior high) at school dances and parties fueled Bob Boss's interest in improvisation. He studied briefly with Jerry Hahn, Bobby Addison and Davis Ramey. Eventually, he worked nightclubs, concerts, shows, & musical theatre, gaining performance and recording experience in many styles. Concerts and festivals include Wolf Trap, Idyllwild, Pine Knob, Ravinia, Winter Park, San Diego Street Scene and several in Europe.
Gilbert Castellanos is recognized by a majority of listeners as the voice of Jazz in San Diego. His ongoing jam sessions and presentation of the "Young Lions" series, currently at Panama 66 in Balboa Park, have provided visibility for many of the areas' outstanding artists and for the young players just getting started. His long-term residency at The Palace Bar in the Westgate Hotel has been a favorite of musicians and listeners. As members of The Rob Thorsen Quartet, we have presented "Jazz, An American Art Form" to thousands of elementary school children all over the county through Young Audiences.
Dean Hulett has been playing music since before he can remember. After years of playing European classical music, he got in to jazz and began his professional career as a jazz bassist. He's toured with Delfayo Marsalis, Christian Howes as well as played and recorded with Azar Lawrence, Wess Anderson, Pharez Whitted, Paul Shaffer band, and many others playing all over the world. When it comes to music, Dean says "the most important thing on stage IS the music. Everything else is secondary"
Richard Sellers has been playing drums professionally for over twenty years. In that time, he has performed with countless groups and ensembles in a variety of styles, including straight-ahead jazz, avant-garde jazz, Brazilian, Latin, funk and hip-hop. In addition, he has worked extensively as a teacher, applying his unique rhythmic approach and meticulous technical methods. A native of Valencia, California, Richard received early training from Stewart Fischer (brother of jazz giant Clare), Earl Palmer, and Joe Porcaro. The support of such greats prepared him for his move to San Diego nearly six years ago, when he began to make frequent performance appearances at San Diego State University, and gigged incessantly with the best professionals in town.
