Markus Hinterhäuser, Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival, will perform a two-part concert at the Ojai Music Festival in Ojai, California on June 8, 2018. The program features rarely heard works by Galina Ustvolskaya, including her Six Sonatas for Piano Solo. The first part of the concert will begin at 1:00 p.m. Hinterhäuser will be joined by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the 2018 Music Director of the Ojai Festival, for the second part of the concert at 2:30 p.m. Both parts will be performed at the Libbey Bowl.
A student of Dmitri Shostakovich, Galina Ustvolskaya (1919-2006) was a composer with a unique and singular artistic vision. As a modernist composing during the Soviet era, little of Ustvolskaya's exhaustive and wide-ranging oeuvre was performed publicly before the 1980s, when she finally gained international recognition as a composer. Of his student, Shostakovich said that Ustvolskaya's music would one day "be valued by all who perceive truth in music to be of paramount importance." On this two-part concert of works by Ustvolskaya for the Ojai Festival, Markus Hinterhäuser will perform her Six Sonatas for Piano Solo and her Sonata for Violin and Piano and Duet for Violin and Piano with Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
Since October 2016, pianist Markus Hinterhäuser has been the Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival, where he has gained an international reputation for his ambitious and forward-thinking programming, including William Kentridge's acclaimed production of Berg's Wozzeck and Anna Netrebko's role debut as Verdi's Aida in 2017, and a new production of Henze's The Bassarids in 2018. As a pianist, Hinterhäuser has performed as a soloist and a chamber musician in the world's major concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Vienna's Musikverein and Konzerthaus, and La Scala. In 2016, Hinterhäuser and pianist Matthias Goerne performed a worldwide tour of Schubert's Winterreise in a production by Kentridge. In recent years, Hinterhäuser has focused his repertoire on the music of 20th- and 21st-century composers, such as Stockhausen, Feldman, and Ligeti. His discography includes the complete piano works of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, as well as compositions by Nono, Feldman, Cage, and Ustvolskaya.
