Billed as "lovingly ripped off from the classic comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail", SPAMALOT is coming to Cygnet Theatre for a staged concert reading. For two nights only, audiences can enjoy an epic search for the Holy Grail all while supporting Cygnet Theatre Artists!
With book and lyrics by Monty Python actor Eric Idle, music by John Du Prez, and directed by Sean Murray, the benefit takes place August 7th and 8th.
This highly irreverent parody tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences will be eating up SPAMALOT. Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the show elevates silliness to an art form.
Spamalot opened on Broadway to financial and critical success, breaking records for advance ticket sales. Says Murray, who played King Arthur in Moonlight Stage Production's version in 2014 and will reprise his role for the reading, "It turned into a cultural phenomenon with wide fan bases that can't get enough of the tongue-in-cheek humor and hilariously skewered broadway-syle musical numbers. We're excited to bring it to Cygnet!"
Each year, Cygnet Theatre presents a staged reading of a musical as a fundraiser. Past productions include Evita, Follies and Hair. The evening will include a hosted reception with light hors devours as well as a silent auction on the patio before the show. Benefit co-chairs are Rick Rinaldi and Wendy Nash. The benefit is sponsored by Ralph Johnson.
Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased in person at the box office located at 4040 Twiggs St., by calling 619-337-1525 or by visiting www.CygnetTheatre.com.
