Coronado Playhouse presents the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Avenue Q from tonight, January 23-February 28, 2015, benefitting San Diego Humane Society and PAWS of Coronado.

Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a small bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q whose residents are raunchy, sweet, real,

thoughtful and outrageously entertaining. The Tony Award-winning best musical is based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx who collaborated on the music, lyrics and book. Audiences will loose themselves in a magical world of people and puppets. Actors work together with their alter ego puppet partners including Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod -- a Republican investment banker with a "secret"; an Internet addict Trekkie Monster and the adorable kindergarten teaching assistant, Kate. There's also a special appearance by child star Gary Coleman who plays the building superintendent.

Avenue Q has been labeled a show like Sesame Street for adults. While there are endearing puppets, THIS SHOW IS NOT FOR CHILDREN but for mature audiences only. There are adult themes, strong language and clever lyrics and music. The urban fairytale features a Tony Award-winning score with songs like, "If you Were Gay", "The Internet is for Porn", "There's a Fine, Fine Line", and "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada". The show comes to life with actors manipulating rod controlled and live hand puppets.

During the six-week run of performances we will host our "Puppets and Pets" community drive. Coronado Playhouse, the Community's Theatre, is raising money and awareness for San Diego Humane Society and the local PAWS of Coronado organization. This 2015 season, our community partnerships continue the commitment to help those in need and their pets. Audiences are invited to write a check or contribute canned or bagged pet foods or toys while attending a performance.
