Coronado Playhouse continues its 2018 Season, A Family Affair, with the 2015 Olivier Award-winning "Best New Play," King Charles III, opening Friday, March 23rd and running until Sunday, April 22nd, 2018 at The Playhouse. Hailed by The New York Times as a "flat-out brilliant portrait of a monarchy in crisis" and "the most insightful and engrossing new history play in decades," with its witty echoes of Shakespearean drama, Mike Bartlett's brilliant contemporary work of speculative history blurs the boundaries of truth and tragedy.
Queen Elizabeth II is dead. Prince Charles ascends to the throne, but what kind of ruler will he make for this once-united United Kingdom? Flanked by wife Camilla and sons William and Harry, Charles challenges an uncompromising Parliament, but it is his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, who shows the real ambition for the sceptered isle. Is Charles the man who would be king, or was he born to succeed only in name? Nominated for five 2016 Tony Awards, this imaginative glimpse of future history is a theatrical event of crowning achievement. King Charles III explores the intricacies of modern monarchy and introduces us to the people beneath the crowns.
Making his Coronado Playhouse directorial debut, Tyler Richards Hewes has assembled a talented and committed ensemble of 18 actors and a dedicated and experienced design & creative team to bring this "bracingly provocative and outrageously entertaining new play" (The Independent) to the Coronado Playhouse stage. This highly anticipated San Diego premiere features acclaimed local actor, Richard Rivera, in the coveted title role of King Charles.
Tickets range from $20-$27 and are available through Coronado Playhouse's Box Office at (619) 435-4856 or online at www.CoronadoPlayhouse.com.
