The Cave Dwellers explores the adventures of some homeless people who are camping out on the stage of an abandoned theatre that is about to be pulled down for a housing project. Humor, grace, innocence and improvisation distinguish this Broadway classic. An enchanting story.

The reading will take place on April 23, 2019 at 7:30pm.  Tickets for the one-night-only reading are $15. William Saroyan (Playwright) was an novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1940. As an Armenian American, Saroyan wrote extensively about the Armenian immigrant life in California. Many of his stories and plays are set in his native Fresno. Some of his best-known works are The Time of Your Life, My Name Is Aram and My Heart's in the Highlands. He has been described as "one of the most prominent literary figures of the mid-20th century ."

DAVID ELLENSTEIN (Director) Born into a theatrical family, David has worked in theatres across the country. Before joining North Coast Rep in 2003 he served as Artistic Director for the Los Angeles Repertory Company and the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company (AJTC). A veteran of over 250 theatrical productions including over 100 productions at North Coast Rep. Other theatres: Coconut Grove Playhouse, Papermill Playhouse, Portland Stage. Renaissance Theatre, Actor's Theatre of Phoenix, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Laguna Playhouse, Southwest Shakespeare Company, AJTC, Meadow Brook Theatre, Portland Rep and Gaslamp Quarter Theatre. Winner of the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award for "2018 Director of the Year Award."

Kandis Chappell* (The Queen) has previously appeared at?North Coast Rep in Collected Stories, King o' the Moon, and The Lion in Winter. She is an Associate Artist of The Old Globe, where she has performed in more than 30 productions. Ms. Chappell has done extensive work just north of North Coast Rep, at South Coast Rep, as well as at theaters across the country.

Ken Ruta* (The King) Actor/Director/Teacher Ken Ruta, longtime Associate Artist of San Diego's Old Globe was a founding company member of Minneapolis' Tyrone Guthrie Theatre (over 30 productions), San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre (over 60 productions) and Cincinnati's Playhouse-In-The-Park, besides enjoying a quarter century association with the Arizona Theatre Company. He has served with the country's leading Resident theatres and opera companies as well as appearing in the Broadway productions of Inherit the Wind, Separate Tables, Duel of Angles, Ross, The Three Sisters, and The Elephant Man plus a National Tour of Oscar Wilde: Diversions and Delights.

Richard Baird* (The Wrecking Crew Boss) is an award-winning actor, director and producer. Twenty-three productions at North Coast Rep including: Gabriel, Holmes & Watson, The Father, Around the World in Eighty Days, Of Mice and Men, Travels with My Aunt; Way Downriver; William Faulkner's 'Old Man', Betrayal, The Dumb Waiter, Ghosts and many more. Richard is the Founding Artistic Director of New Fortune Theatre Company where he has directed and appeared in Henry the Fifth, The Birthday Party and Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Richard has appeared in regional theatres across the country, and has directed for Intrepid Theatre and Diversionary Theatre. He is a proud member of Actors Equity.

North Coast Repertory Theatre, under the artistic leadership of David Ellenstein since 2003, is a professional Equity theatre founded in 1982 by Olive and Tom Blakistone.
