Boom Kat Dance Theatre presents a World Premiere Theatrical Event - perfect for the whole family.... NeverWonderLand! NeverWonderLand asks what if Peter Pan and Wonderland's Alice left their normal, boring life in London and found each other in the same fantastical world, would they ever want to come back to reality? This intersection of Neverland and Wonderland and of theatre, dance and music will preview on Friday, May 29, will open on Saturday, May 30 and will continue through Sunday, June 14 at the Miles Memorial Playhouse, 1130 Lincoln Blvd. in Santa Monica.
Reimagining two of the nineteenth century's best and loved tales - J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" and Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" - NeverWonderLand wrestles with intersections of time and place, fantasy and reality, childhood and adulthood. Fusing two iconic visions of youthful exploration and adolescent fear, NeverWonderLand depicts Peter and Alice searching for a place in lives "real" and imagined: set at the height of Industrial Revolution-era England, it deconstructs and rebuilds the borderland at which Neverland and Wonderland confront the world we know.
BOOM KAT's process is collaborative, as each company member strives to explore prevailing trends that they see in their world. First, they spend weeks examining issues, stories, and events that have touched them until they arrive at a theme for a show that reflects those discussions. They then create the structure of the show, cast, and begin the collaborative choreographic process that will eventually become a dynamic full-length performance.
During their first year they fashioned their structure around the theme "Revolutions," creating characters out of people that they see in everyday life. The structure of their second show, "The Jungle Book," was created by taking apart and reassembling Rudyard Kipling's story. And now, they've written their very first original story by dissecting "Peter Pan" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and putting them together again as a prequel to the stories everyone knows.
