Reeve Carney is no stranger to iconic roles, from playing Peter Parker in Broadway's SPIDERMAN: TURN OFF THE DARK to Dorian Gray in Showtime's PENNYDREADFUL he has proven he is not afraid to take on challenges. His next iconic role comes in the form of Riff Raff in the reimaging of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW on Fox October 20th, 2016.
How familiar was Reeve with the source material before he took on this role?
"I was more influenced by the different forms of music and film that influenced the original ROCKY HORROW PICTURE SHOW than I was by the film itself, being hadn't really seen it as a child. I'd seen clips of it but upon getting the audition, I reinvestigated things and watched it a number of times and went to a shadow cast performance which was amazing. Certainly the goal for me and for everyone is to do an homage and tribute to what ...Richard O'Brien wrote this thing and I felt the level of responsibility to pay tribute and also something that felt natural to me."
In this version he gets to work with the original Frank himself, Tim Curry, along with Laverne Cox as the newest Frank. He talks about what that experience was like to work with them.
"We were always looking for Tim's approval, so I think any time we saw that he seemed happy with something it makes you that much more happy. It was amazing to work with him and hang out with him. He's so lovely. One of his main goals was just to hang out. I think what Laverne brings is so fresh and so exciting. It's great to have, once this comes out to have different options and it's pretty cool."
Is this something that the fans of the original theatrical incarnation, and all the versions that followed will be pleased to see?
"We're fans ourselves, so our hopes are that the fans will embrace it for what we are trying to do. We are not trying to replace the original in any way, but to bring more people into the ROCKY HORROR family. Let's say you're a 16 year old kid at this point in time, watching something that is filmed a certain way may be more appealing than something filmed in the 70's, which may lead them to that. Which I think is the goal. Something more familiar to them visually I think that's part of the goal."
