A lot has happened to the characters of MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, but Agent Coulson and Skye (aka Daisy now) have endured quite a roller coaster of a ride over the last two seasons. The season finale left the audience with many questions; Skye is now Daisy, what's happening to Coulson's arm, and how do Inhumans come into play? Chloe Bennet and Clark Gregg sat with me at Comic Con, naturally the discussion turned to what could possibly be the next step in the evolution of their characters.
What can we expect to see as your characters sense of who and in some cases, what they are, and their evolution as they go into the third season?
"I can confirm that this season I will referred to Daisy in all things, my trailer says Daisy, my script says Daisy," Chloe says excitedly. "You will definitely see an evolution there. Right now, we are recruiting Inhumans, and there has been news about the Secret Warriors. So people are pretty excited about it."
"I didn't think Coulson could go through any more than he went through in Season 1, finding out the grim truth of how and why he was brought back, and have it all pay off with the destruction of Shield and then Hydra and then getting made head of Shield, and the Shield doesn't exist. The ups and downs have been perfectly comic bookian", Clark Gregg says with a laugh." Then again last season ranged from the alien writings to Shield 2.0, and everyone's loss of faith, and really the separation, the fact that his actions put Skye (Daisy) in danger. Really, our two characters really got separated for a while, so it was really nice to have that payoff and come back together and have them unified."
So what excites them about the next coming season?
"I thought the first season was traumatic, and then obviously the second season everything she's talked about since we've met Skye; her whole goal in life was to meet her parents. Then she met them and it was worse and even more screwed up then she can even imagine. Having your Mom try to kill you probably doesn't sit well in your psyche. I think she needs some serious therapy sessions," Chloe says. "We don't know anything about Season 3, but I'd like to think that she's extra determined. Right now she's done, she knows everything about herself, she knows where she came from, she knows her family, and so now it's going to be about - being truly embracing that."
Clark finds all of the possibilities very relevant as well. "I think what I'm most excited about, in terms of something in this world that I've always been excited about, especially about the Inhumans, it that some people carry something within them for eons in their genetic makeup that makes them different. They evolve differently, and there are those that think that those evolve differently are the enemy and should be exterminated, and then there are the other people that think they represent a new and exciting facet of who we are, and that is topical to me."
Are there any clues in the next season's events that may be a clue to which side Coulson would be on for the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR movie coming out next year?
"There is certainly a love there for Steve that goes very deep," Gregg says with a laugh. " I think we've started to sense that Coulson, is really starting to learn, especially because of his emotional connection to Skye, that these are people who are part of who we are, and I think that suggests where he might go. On the other hand he's got loyalties that are deep on both sides of Civil War from the comics. I've got a feeling that we're going to see some twists and turns."
