AVENUE Q, the smash-hit Broadway musical about real life in New York City, as told by a cast of people and puppets, will return to San Diego at the CIVIC THEATRE, performing Tuesday July 6 through Sunday July 11, 2010. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Sunday May 16 at 10AM.
"We regret that the producers of THE 101 DALMATIANS MUSICAL have cancelled the remainder of the National Tour, affecting numerous cities, including San Diego", remarked Broadway/San Diego General Manager Diane Willcox. THE 101 DALMATIANS MUSICAL was originally scheduled to play the San Diego Civic Theatre June 1 - 6.
"We are delighted to be able to secure the return to San Diego of this iconoclastic, quirky, Tony Award®-winning musical that dares to parody just about everything and everyone - while paying tribute to some of our most cherished icons," Willcox added. "This show is funny, poignant, tongue-in-cheek and truthful. AVENUE Q is everything intelligent theatre should be, and we think that San Diego audiences will again be just as taken with it as we are."
AVENUE Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone's looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship, and a "purpose." Eventually, Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that "the real world" isn't so bad, after all!
The New York Times hailed AVENUE Q as "a breakthrough musical of a very different stripe. Savvy, sassy and delicious!" and Entertainment Weekly claimed it was "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see!"
