Continuing with its season of silliness, the historic Woodlawn Theatre stages a four-week run of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein on its main stage, opening tonight, October 4. This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, based on the 1974 classic comedy film of the same name, follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that's Fronkensteen to you) as he attempts to complete his grandfather's masterwork and bring a corpse to life - with both scary and hilarious complications.
Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. October 4 through November 3. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.woodlawntheatre.com, or by calling the box office at 210- 267- 8388. Prices are $15 for students and children, $20 for seniors and military, and $23 for adults.
The larger-than-life musical, which was called "delightfully nutty, glittering, buoyant fun" by the LA Times, opened on Broadway in 2007 and is the winner of the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award and the Broadway.com Audience Award for best musical.
Warning: You will walk out with a "7-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide gorilla" of an earworm from the song-and-dance-spoof (complete with giant top hats and tails) of Irving Berlin's Puttin' on the Ritz.
The Woodlawn Theatre is San Antonio's historic community theatre, located in the heart of the Deco District at 1920 Fredericksburg Road, just south of Hildebrand. Free parking with security patrol is available.
