Last week, Latin Grammy-winning artist Julieta Venegas launched the Brave Concert Series, a signature partnership between Voto Latino and Live Nation, that will include voter activations at concerts for some of the biggest artists in music.
"The way we build on democracy is for everyone to participate by going out to vote. To be a citizen of this country means you have the possibility to go out to the voting booths and vote for the people you think will steer this country in the direction you want," said Venegas, ahead of her show. "It's important for young Latinos to inspire their parents and for parents to inspire their children and to realize our youth are our future."
Also as part of Voto Latino's local activations, actress and activist America Ferrera embarked on a media tour, interviewing with San Antonio media outlets on the importance of voting rights and participating in our country's democratic process. Last week's events are part of Voto Latino's broader initiative to engage thousands of young Latinos to become politically active.
Ferrera also took part in a Voto Latino roundtable to provide a glimpse of Voto Latino's 2016 work, which included Latino leaders from San Antonio and was co-hosted by San Antonio's OCI Group and catered by Chef Rico Torres of Mixtli.
"A lot of people feel very disenfranchised from the political process and a big part of that is no one comes to them and says to them, 'Your voice matters. You need to stand up and use your right to vote and represent not just yourself but your community. And, if you don't show up then you're leaving a vacuum of power for somebody else to make decisions that are going to affect your life and your family's life directly,'" Ferrera said during an interview with Great Day SA.
Finally, Voto Latino partnered with Telemundo and its local affiliate station in San Antonio, as well as with local hip-hop artist Zeles, for Turn up for Super Tuesday, a high-energy voter engagement musical event that featured local artists, encouraging young Latinos to flex their political muscle ahead of Super Tuesday.
