Jonathan Kenneth Butler is a South African singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music is often classified as R&B, jazz fusion or worship music. Butler maintained a loyal following in the 1980s and 1990s, in South Africa, the United States and Europe.
In 2006, Butler was a featured vocalist on the album Gospel Goes Classical, produced by University of Alabama at Birmingham music professor Henry Panion. This recording, featuring arrangements by Panion, Tommy Stewart, Michael Loveless and Ray Reach, rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Gospel chart, and No. 3 on the Classical Crossover chart. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for his single "Going Home."
In 2008, Butler guest-starred on George Duke's album Dukey Treats, alongside the late Teena Marie on the track "Sudan," talking about the disasters of Darfur.
From 2005 to 2012 Butler lived in Bell Canyon, California.
The show also features saxophonist BillyRay Sheppard, a resident of San Antonio who has been performing since the 1980s. His musical roots run deep, having his earliest musical experiences in blues, R&B, reggae, Latin, Tejano, and country bands. It's his love for music that keeps him grounded and his love for jazz that keeps him performing. Soon after academic life, he pursues many different avenues in the field of music; at times as a sideman for many local artists and other times as a studio musician.
BillyRay is one of the first smooth jazz performers in the San Antonio area, having shared his talents onstage with notable genre stars Steve Oliver, Peter White, Adam Hawley and Will Donato. He has also performed with Roy Hargrove, Julio Iglesias, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and many more. With his saxophone's rich, warm, soulful tune, he has made a name for himself on the local and national music scene.
This performance is part of the 2019 Alamo City Jazz Series at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre.
