In late December, BroadwayWorld posted Wish Lists of Musicals and Plays that should be produced in Central Texas in the 2013-2014 season.
Several months later, many theater companies have announced their upcoming seasons, and some of our wish-list shows are part of the line-up.
Here, arranged by production date, are the shows that appeared on the BroadwayWorld Wishlists for 2013-2014 which have been confirmed for productions in the upcoming season...
REEFER MADNESS - THE MUSICAL
Production Company: Doctuh Mistuh Productions
Production Dates: Now thru June 30, 2013
Where It Ranked: Number 12 on the Musicals Wish List
Why It Made The List: Austin theater companies tend to do well with social and political satire, and the musicalized version of the 1936 cult classic film of the same name is satire at its hysterical best. Is there anything sillier than an opening number featuring stoned zombies or a deus ex machina moment in which Jesus himself tells our hero about the disastrous effects of pot-smoking?
You can read BWW's review of Doctor Mistuh's production of REEFER MADNESS here.
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Production Company: The City Theatre
Production Dates: July 25, 2013 - August 8, 2013
Where It Ranked: Honorable Mention on the Plays Wish List
Why It Made The List: I'm sure that the talented actors and actresses of Austin could bring Tennessee Williams's masterpiece to life.
BONNIE AND CLYDE
Production Company: McCallum High School
Production Dates: September 19, 2013 - September 22, 2013
Where It Ranked: Number 1 on the Musicals Wish List
Why It Made The List: It's only a matter of time until Austin sees a production of this musical about two of Texas's most infamous historical figures. I sincerely hope we get a production of this sooner rather than later. While it didn't do well on Broadway, the show was praised by audiences and includes what is hands down Frank Wildhorn's best score.
TITUS ANDRONICUS
Production Company: Texas State University - San Marcos Department of Theatre and Dance
Production Dates: November 7, 2013 - November 10, 2013
Where It Ranked: Honorable Mention on the Plays Wish List
Why It Made The List: Nothing says "a good night of theatre" like good ol' Bill and buckets of blood. When it comes to Shakespeare's tragedies, Titus would kick Hamlet's indecisive butt.
FUNNY GIRL
Production Company: The Playhouse - San Antonio
Production Dates: June 6, 2014 - June 29, 2014
Where It Ranked: Number 13 on the Musicals List
Why It Made The List: Austin has its fair share of funny girls (Jill Blackwood, Michelle Cheney, Evelyn LaLonde), so FUNNY GIRL seems like a no-brainer for the Austin theater scene. Sure, this show may be a bit old and dated. It's one of those star vehicle dinosaurs from the 60s, but it's one of the best and most lovable of its kind. Given the hysterical book and the incredible score, featuring hits like "I'm the Greatest Star," and "People," it's hard to rain on this show's parade.
TOMMY
Production Company: Two separate productions at Zach Theatre in Austin and The Playhouse - San Antonio in San Antonio
Production Dates: Zach's production runs July 9, 2014 - August 17, 2014. The Playhouse's production runs August 1, 2014 - August 24, 2014.
Where It Ranked: Honorable Mention on the Musicals List
Why It Made The List: It's The Who. Enough said. Bonus points if the producing theater would temporarily install pinball machines in the lobby.
CARRIE
Production Company: Austin Theatre Project
Production Dates: October 19, 2014 - November 9, 2014
Where It Ranked: Number 3 on the Musicals Wish List
Why It Made The List: True, the musical adaptation of Stephen King's debut novel was a notorious flop on Broadway, but the recently Revisal version that debuted Off-Broadway this year is a vast improvement. The show allows for some tour-de-force performances, especially for Carrie and her mother, and a show about bullying seems timely. Couple that with the fact that the famous film version gets a remake in 2013 and it seems like the perfect time for a musical about this telekinetic teen.
We will keep this listing up to date as more local theatres announce their upcoming seasons.
