The songs are known the world over. The story is sweet and sappy. ANNIE is a show that young girls fall in love with and pretend to be a part of at a young age. But, the current tour of ANNIE seems to appeal to not just young girls but to many others as well. Opening in San Antonio, the audience quickly was taken by the talents of the individuals involved in the tour. Issie Swickle as Annie had the audience applauding from the very first song to the very last note. The endearing qualities of Swickle and her strong vocal performance, proved that the role was one she could handle. The other orphan girls, including Lilly Mae Stewart as Molly and Adia Dant as Pepper, proved they too were up for the challenges of the demands of such an iconic show. As Lynn Andrews hit the stage as the dreaded Miss Hannigan, the audience immediately noticed her talent and strength as this character. Andrews made it her own without any characteristics of Carol Burnett who played the part in the 1982 film. Gilgamesh Taggett was great in the role of Oliver Warbucks and seemed to have a real connection as Warbucks.
Another standout part of the show had to be the wonderful set design by Beowulf Boritt. It was magnificent and stunning as the set changed from scene to scene so flawlessly and beautifully. Boritt seemed to hit it right on the nail with the authentic backdrops that made ANNIE shine. This along with the wonderfully orchestrated songs by Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse and story by Thomas Meehan made ANNIE a show that has everyone remembering that the sun always comes out tomorrow no matter how bleak the situation may be.
