Review: MATILDA THE MUSICAL is Family Fun in San Antonio

Matilda is a beloved story written by Roald Dahl and enjoyed by children all over the world. It's hugely popular story led Dennis Kelly to adapt the story and Tim Minchin to pen the music and lyrics for MATILDA THE MUSICAL. As it first premiered in in UK in 2010, MATILDA THE MUSICAL made its way to the United States and Broadway to debut in 2013. With the huge success in the UK and US, the show went on to tour in the US in 2015. This family-friendly show is making its way across the country and continues to entertain audience members from three to one hundred.

The story of Matilda is one of loneliness, sadness, and despair as the young girl tries to make her way in a world where everyone around her has no appreciation for her intelligence and imagination. The characters are very well written and the actors on the tour seem to have a great grasp on the roles they play. At this particular production Jenna Weir played the part of Matilda. Her voice is one of strength and range as she sang such songs as "Naughty" and "Quiet." Weir's acting was equally impressive as she interacted with fellow actors on the stage.

The humor of Matilda's family that was written into the show made it obvious why actors Darcy Stewart (as Mrs. Wormwood) and Matt Harrington (as Mr. Wormwood) were such a great fit. Stewart's comedic lines were performed flawlessly and her voice, strong. Harrington kept the audience engaged and laughing as he delivered his lines and shared his slapstick moments. And also worth mentioning was Darren Burkett who played the role of Matilda's brother, Michael. Although not many lines, the role of Michael was important and Burkett was spot on in his portrayal.

The other stand out in this particular production is that of Dan Chameroy who played Mrs. Trunchbull. The requirement for the part seemed to be a lot but Chameroy pulled it off. As Mrs. Trunchbull, there are some physical requirements as well as the necessity to have a great set of chops to sing along with the children and other characters onstage. Chameroy seemed to be made for the part.
