This week has been pretty hectic at The Playhouse San Antonio. As we have been continuing our rehearsals for GUYS AND DOLLS, another group of people have been in and around the theater as well, and I don't mean the cast of WITTENBERG, which is playing in our Cellar Theater. I'm referring to the cast and crew of an upcoming motion picture titled THE SONG. The movie was written by one of San Antonio's own, David Kauffman, and stars the ever-so-handsome and talented Cheyenne Jackson. The movie has been shooting all over San Antonio the last couple weeks and it just so happens this week they are shooting some scenes at The Playhouse. We all arrived for rehearsal on Wednesday night to a stage full of huge lights and television screens on stands and cameras and such. As our cast trickled in, the movie crew began to move things off of the stage and into the basement of the theater where they were to be shooting scenes. We started our run-through of the show and I made my way backstage to run some lines before my scene. All of a sudden we hear, "Rolling! Silence!" Uhh...what? As the movie began shooting their scene, we were all required to be silent up on stage as well. This was new to most of us, but we did as we were told until we heard, "Cut!" at which point we continued with rehearsal.
So, I'm sitting backstage and various people begin coming up the stairs from the basement with equipment, cameras and such, and I'm completely distracted by it. Then, my heart drops as Cheyenne Jackson comes up the stairwell and into the backstage area. Now, I'm not shy. In fact, I'm a pretty confident guy, but all of a sudden I was star-struck. I said nothing, moved nothing, and thought nothing. What a cheese ball! He then slipped into his dressing room and that was that.
Rehearsal for the rest of the evening was interesting. It was obvious we were in the way of the movie crew and they were definitely in ours as well, but we all managed. Good times. We also found out two of our crapshooters were going to have to drop the show, one being one of our best dancers. Unfortunate, but these kinds of things happen and the show must go on. Thankfully, Michelle was able to recruit a couple theater veterans to step in and they hit the ground running, learning all the blocking and choreography right away.
Keep up with this blog to hear about our photo shoot soon!
