GOOD COMPANY THEATRE PRESENTS A VIVID BLEND OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND SONG
WITH THE UTAH PREMIERE OF 35MM: A MUSICAL EXHIBITION
May 8 – 25 | Thursdays - Saturdays at 8pm | Sundays at 4pm
Ogden, Utah--Good Company Theatre is delighted to announce the Utah premiere of 35MM: A Musical Exhibition by Ryan Scott Oliver, featuring photography by Matthew Murphy. With the click of a shutter, living moments become static photographs—a colorful bundle of balloons
being carried down the street, the forced expression of a model posing for a portrait, two people facing away from one another in the night. For lyricist and songwriter Ryan Scott Oliver (2009 Jonathan Larson Grantee, 2008 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre Recipient), a photo is only the beginning of a more vibrant story. Using the diverse work of photographer Matthew Murphy as inspiration, Oliver composed a song cycle that enlivens fifteen images through anecdotes, epiphanies, and digressions. These snapshot stories, as he calls them, combine to form a multisensory piece of musical theatre that pushes each medium it employs in moving and provocative ways.
“35MM is one of the most successful pieces of experimental musical theatre I have encountered,” director Randall Eames remarks. “Its themes are remarkably of the moment, touching on ideas of vulnerability, honesty, and how photography effects our relationships with others and ourselves.”
“We are excited that our first musical production is a genre-bending and unconventional one,” Good Company Theatre Artistic Director Alicia Washington enthuses. “35MM fuses contemporary music and photography in a way that expands the definition of the musical beyond its traditions.”
This production features local actors Sean Bishop (Brigadoon, Fiddler On The Roof), Derek Gregerson (RENT, Road Show), Jennifer Hughes (Grey Gardens, The Vagina Monologues), Taylor Knuth (Ragtime, The Plain Princess), and Karli Rose Lowry (Assassins, RENT). 35MM: A Musical Exhibition marks the professional directorial debut of Randall Eames (Salt Lake Acting Company, Weber State University), and Anne Puzey (Hale Centre Theatre, The Egyptian Theatre Company) serves as Musical Director.
Tickets are available for $15 online at goodcotheatre.com, and will also be available for $17 at the door before each performance. This show contains strong adult language. Additional information is available on our website.
