Utah Symphony's Family Series Announces MAGIC MIME COMPANY And Gershwin's MAGIC KEY In March

On March 18 at 11 AM, Utah Symphony bass player David Yavornitzky guest conducts the Utah Symphony and Magic Circle Mime Company through the story of a mischievous street musician who finds herself thrust into the role of Mozart. On April 22 at 11 AM Associate Conductor Rei Hotoda accompanies Classical Kids Live! as it captivates audiences with a fully-staged play and period costumes woven together with more than 23 musical excerpts from Gershwin's best-known classics. Saturday, March 18, Magic Circle Mime Company joins Utah Symphony for "The Mozart Experience". Originally created for the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, the troupe now travels around the country to share the story of a street musician who finds herself in the role of Mozart and a modern-day Mozart is born. Throughout the program, well-known favorites such as the Overture to "Don Giovanni", Concerto No. 4 in D major for Violin and Orchestra, and Magic Flute Overture are sure to delight all ages.

SAT. APRIL 22 - CLASSICAL KIDS LIVE "GERSHWIN'S MAGIC KEY"

Saturday, April 22, Classical Kids Live!'s "Gershwin's Magic Key" will weave music provided by Utah Symphony into the performance as two actors share anecdotes and observations based on true incidents from composer George Gershwin's life. Using history, drama, music, and fun this concert is the perfect way to introduce a child to the life and music of Gershwin through a fully-staged play about the composer's life.

The music of George Gershwin has been heard around the world and profoundly influenced the modern evolution of opera. As creator of one of America's most important operas, "Porgy and Bess," and with the widespread adaption of his compositions for film and television, he was not just a composer but also a prominent influence in 20th century music. The theatrical concert presentation features lighting, projections, sound, scenic properties and period costumes woven together with 23 excerpts from Gershwin's best-loved works, including "Rhapsody in Blue," "Strike Up The Band," "An American in Paris," and "I Got Rhythm."

Rei Hotoda currently serves as Associate Conductor for the Utah Symphony and made her debut with the symphony at the 2015 Deer Valley® Music Festival. She received her Bachelor's degree in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music, Master's and Doctorate degrees at the University of Southern California, and studied conducting with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Ms. Hotoda has served as assistant conductor at several of today's leading ensembles and has appeared as a guest conductor for many esteemed orchestras. She has been awarded the 2006 Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, a Peabody Career Development Grant, the Women's Philharmonic Scholarship, and an Illinois Arts Council International Arts Exchange Grant. Ms. Hotoda has appeared many times as a featured piano soloist and conductor from the piano.

Arrive early for "The Mozart Experience" to enjoy the Instrument Petting Zoo! In Abravanel Hall lobby. Kids of all ages are welcome to try an array of instruments provided by Summerhays Music with guidance provided by Utah Symphony Youth Guild members. Instruments and mentors will be available before the concert from 10 AM to 10:50 AM, and after the concert from 12 PM to 12:30 PM.
