The regular season of the Utah Symphony is over, but that doesn't mean the artists are taking time off before the Deer Valley® Music Festival starts in July. The Utah Symphony is determined to reach as many corners of Utah as possible with the Mighty 5® Tour in August and the Community Concert Series throughout the summer. This series is an annual tradition for the Utah Symphony at different venues: Scera Shell in Orem, Sundance Resort in Provo Canyon, Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, and Snowbasin Resort in Huntsville.
The first stop is on June 23 at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Amphitheatre in Orem, Utah at 8 p.m. Grammy award winning violinist Jenny Oaks Baker will join Guest Conductor Thomas Hong and the Utah Symphony for this special performance against a backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains. Ms. Baker will be performing Disney, classical and pop favorites. The Utah Symphony will be playing patriotic favorites including the "Star-Spangled Banner" and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture complete with the sounds of real cannons.
Next on the calendar, the Utah Symphony presents an evening devoted to patriotic celebration at Sundance Resort's beautiful outdoor amphitheater in the mountains of Provo Canyon on June 28. Guest conductor Hong returns to the podium to lead the orchestra in traditional favorites including "Armed Forces Salute" and "Liberty Fanfare", as well as well-known classical pieces by Strauss, junior and senior.
The Utah Symphony makes a stop on their patriotic Community Concert Series with a performance at the Waterfall at Thanksgiving Point on July 2 at 8:30 p.m. Associate Conductor Valdimir Kulenovic returns to the podium to conduct this special performance that includes all your classic red, white and blue patriotic favorites including "The Star Spangled Banner," "America the Beautiful" and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." Pianist Mary Anne Huntsman will perform Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F, and local soprano Celena Shafer (who portrayed Konstanze in the Utah Opera's recent performances of Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio) will sing "Summertime" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.
This performance is a perfect segue into the patriotic month of July which initiates the Deer Valley Music Festival season on July 4 with the Texas Tenors and July 5 with Kenny Rogers. After the festival and the Mighty 5 Tour in August, Vladimir Kulenovic conducts the Utah Symphony at Snowbasin Resort on August 21, 7:30 p.m. for the final concert in the Community Concert Series. They will be performing dance classical scores like Copland's "Four Dance Episodes" from Rodeo, Kodaly's Dances of Galánta, and Gershwin and Bennett's Porgy and Bess.
Remember, even in the summer, the weather can be chilly after the sun goes down over the mountains of Utah-bring a sweater and a blanket when you visit all the different corners of Utah through this concert series.
On Wednesday, June 25 at 7 PM, guest conductor Hong will lead the Utah Sympony in a showcase concert, the Gina Bachauer Young Artists Competition, featuring young piano finalists from across the globe who perform concerti with the full orchestra at Abravanel Hall.
