On November 3 and 4 at 7:30 PM, Utah's own William Hagen takes the stage with guest conductor Matthias Pintscher to perform classic crowd pleasers by Saint-Saëns and Ravel with the Utah Symphony.
Together, they'll prepare you for the exhilarating majesty of Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, his only work fully composed in the US, yet imbued with the rhythmic energy and melancholy of his native Russia.
Tickets range from $15-$66 and can be purchased at utahsymphony.org or by calling (801) 533-6683.
William Hagen, a 23 year old violinist, is the third prize winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition - the highest ranking American since 1985. Mr. Hagen has been lauded as a "brilliant virtuoso...a standout" (The Dallas Morning News) with "an intellectual command of line and score, and just the right amount of power." (violinist.com) Since his professional debut at age nine with the Utah Symphony, Mr. Hagen has performed with conductors Marin Alsop, Christian Arming, Plácido Domingo, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, among many others. Mr. Hagen is passionate about chamber music, and has performed with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York City, the Colburn Chamber Music Society in Los Angeles, and at the Aspen Music Festival and School. As a local Utahn, he began lessons at the age of 4, and at 10 entered the studio of Robert Lipsett at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, commuting to Los Angeles every week for lessons.
Matthias Pintscher, prolific composer and conductor, is the Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporian, as well as the Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Festival Academy. He continues his partnerships with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as its Artist-in-Association, and with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra as its Artist-in-Residence. His two areas of focus, composition and conducting, are extremely complementary; his intrinsic understanding of the score from the composer's perspective informs his ability to communicate on the podium. "My thinking as a conductor is informed by the process of my own writing," notes Mr. Pintscher, "and vice versa of course." In the 2015/16 season, Mr. Pintscher made his conducting debuts with the Berlin Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Prague Philharmonia. He may justly be titled the most sought-after German composer of his generation, with his music championed by some of the finest ensembles throughout the world- Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and the BBC Symphony.
