Continuing a successful season of plays, The Ziegfeld Theater is pleased to bring audience favorite, HAIRSPRAY, to its stage, running August 14 - September 5, 2015.
The 1950s are out and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs.
It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her 'do!
HAIRSPRAY is directed by Michael Neilson, music directed by Hailey Weeks, costumed by Becky Cole and choreographed by Kacee Neff. Following in the tradition of casting a male as Tracy's mother, Edna, The Ziegfeld's production also features a male in the role of Motormouth, matron of the African American community.
HAIRSPRAY features book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters.
The Ziegfeld Theater continues its third season in 2015 with another popular musical, after performing Fiddler on the Roof, LES MISERABLES and West Side Story to near sell-out crowds. Under the executive leadership of Caleb and Morgan Parry and the artistic leadership of Rick Rea, the theater pursues a mission of Professional Standard, Community Spirit as it strives to bring quality entertainment to diverse audiences in Northern Utah.
The opening gala and performance is Friday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. Regular performances are 7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, with two 2:00 p.m. matinees on Saturdays August 29 and September 5, two Monday evening performances on August 24 and 31, and two Thursday evening performances on August 27 and September 3.
