The Black Box Theatre at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will present "The Meeting", a play that explores a fictional meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Differing in their philosophies, but alike in their mutual respect, the two men debate their varying approaches to the same grave social problems, both prepared to die for their beliefs but neither aware of how soon their assassins' bullets would await them.
The play runs January 12 through 14, 2012 with performances at 7:30 pm. Two matinee performances have also been scheduled. Tickets can be purchased through the Grand Theatre box office.
Cast members include Lonzo Liggins as Malcolm X, Terence Johnson as DR. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Harold DeHorney as Rashad, bodyguard of Malcolm X. Melissa Adams, a professional director and actress, directs this production. Ms. Adams is co-founder of the EttaGrace Black Theatre Program.
One matinee performance will be held on January 12 at a 1:00 p.m. Following the performance, which runs about 90 minutes, a panel discussion will follow featuring SLCC faculty members Millie Sparks and Josh Gold. There will be an additional matinee on Saturday January 14th at 4:00 pm. with a panel discussion following the performance. The panel members will include Reverend France Davis, Pastor at the Calvary Baptist Church and Dr. Anthony Farley, who will be the visiting professor for SLCC Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration events. The panel discussions are free and open to the public.
Play dates: January 12, 13, and 14. Evening performances 7:30pm Thursday - Saturday, matinee January 12 at 1:00 and January 14 at 4:00 pm.
