A new community choir open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18 starts rehearsals in Utah Valley this month.
SCERA Center for the Arts has once again expanded the scope of their arts education programs by creating a children's choir. In past years, the SCERA Children's Choir was a successful part of the attractions, and SCERA is planning a reboot of the choir with fresh new energy and a new director.
The music that the choir will perform will run the gamut from pop to folk, and holiday to classical, according to director Tyson Wright.
Fall Semester begins on August 31, 2015. Online registration is available at www.scera.org or by calling (801) 225-ARTS. The choir will meet on Mondays and Fridays from 4:00-5:30pm. There is a daytime option for home school families on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30am. Tuition is $35 per month plus a $45 materials fee for the semester.
"I am excited about the direction we want to take the choir," says Wright. "We are going to have fun, perform some fantastic pieces, and bring joy into people's lives through music. We are already getting a wonderful response from the community. We have so much musical talent in Utah County, and the more opportunities the kids have to shine, the more they are going to step up and amaze us."
SCERA President & CEO Adam J. Robertson is enthusiastic about the new program. "We really want to hit all of the areas of the arts - we already have visual arts, we have dance, and theater, and music and choir is definitely something important we wanted to add...to be a part of a group of kids who have the same interests, develop new skills and talents, have fun and the chance to perform, well, that's what SCERA is all about."
As a lifelong participant in choirs, including the world-renowned Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus as a young man, and the LDS Church-sponsored Latter-Day Celebration Choir as an adult, Wright knows the value of performing has on kids. "Performing in choirs really helped me to develop as a singer and discover my passion for music. And it got me hooked on being on stage."
