Plan-B Theatre Company opens its 25th season with THE KREUTZER SONATA, a co-production with the Nova Chamber Music Series.
A harrowing exploration of the mind of a murderer (Robert Scott Smith), a man driven mad by unfulfilled passions - and Beethoven's music. This cautionary tale of rage, revenge and remorse is interwoven with a live performance of Beethoven's sonata by Kathryn Eberle (violin) and Jason Hardink (piano).
Freely adapted from Leo Tolstoy's short story by Eric Samuelsen (the author of MIASMA, AMERIGO, BORDERLANDS, RADIO HOUR EPISODE 8: FAIRYANA, NOTHING PERSONAL, CLEARING BOMBS and 3). Directed by Jerry Rapier.
"Collaboration between NOVA Chamber Music Series and Plan-B Theatre makes so much sense; both organizations serve the community of Salt Lake City and Utah with programming of profound local relevance that is imagined and performed as if we were on an international stage. When we first collaborated on Stravinsky's A Soldier's Tale (September 2013), there was immediate follow-up discussion between the artistic leadership of both companies regarding the creation of a new work that would represent a seamless integration of theater and music. Tolstoy's novella 'The Kreutzer Sonata' is one of those rare instances where a musical work (Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano, opus 47, "Kreutzer") assumes the role of a character in the story, a character that motivates and drives the dramatic arc of the narrative. Eric Samuelsen's new play adapts the original story for the theater in a manner that allows Beethoven's music to come to the fore of the action, a gripping and visceral realization of Tolstoy's text such as one could never experience by simply reading the story. NOVA is extremely proud of this project and honored to be a part of Plan-B Theatre's 25th anniversary season!" - Jason Hardink, Artistic Director, NOVA Chamber Music Series
