Pioneer Theatre Company presents Readings of THE ENVELOPE by Alex Lewin

Pioneer Theatre Company continues its 2017-2018 Play-by-Play new play reading series with Alex Lewin's The Envelope. The staged readings will take place at the Dumke Auditorium of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018.

In this timely and fast-paced political thriller, a young blogger - the prodigal son of a powerful D.C. family - receives a trove of classified documents from an anonymous source. But his quest to authenticate the documents will force him to investigate the dark history of his own family.

Playwright ALEX LEWIN's plays have been presented and developed at the O'Neill Playwrights Conference, the La Jolla Playhouse, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Chautauqua Theater Company, Geva Theatre Center and others, and he has been a finalist for the the Weissberger Award, the Kendeda Prize and the Heideman Award. His work has been commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse and Ensemble Studio Theatre/Sloan Foundation.

Matt August directs the reading, having directed the PTC productions of In the Heights (regional premiere), Two Dollar Bill (World Premiere) and Much Ado About Nothing. Recent directing credits include Grinch on Broadway, 12 National Tours, MSG, Opry; King Charles III (Arizona Theatre Co); Discord (ATC, Geffen, NoHo Arts); Trouble We Come From produced by Garry Marshall. He is an OSF Killian Directing Fellow, Drama League Fellow and finalist for the 2016 TCG Alan Schneider Directing Award. Upcoming projects are Clybourne Park at Laguna Playhouse and the feature film LP/OP.

The cast includes Equity actors Corey Allen, TOBIN ATKINSON and Robert Scott SMITH. TYSON BAKER, SUSANNA FLORENCE, BRANDT GARBER and JESSE KLICK complete the cast.

Corey Allen returns to PTC from New York to play Carl after appearing in PTC productions of Two Dollar Bill and A Few Good Men, and the Play-by-Play reading of Mr. Wheeler's. His New York credits include Am I Dead?, Moony's Kid Don't Cry and Created Equal. Regionally, he has worked with Hungtington Theatre Co., The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and others.

TOBIN ATKINSON plays X/The Man and has performed on the PTC stage in The Crucible, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelve Angry Men, Richard III and As You Like It. His other regional credits include roles at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Plan-B Theatre Company, Salt Lake Acting Company, the Asolo in Florida, and the Studio and the Shakespeare Theatre in D.C. He co-founded and ran Plan-B Theatre Company for eight years with Cheryl Cluff.

Robert Scott SMITH plays Donovan and was most recently seen in PTC's Play-by-Play reading of Perpetual Girl. His other PTC credits include the staged reading of Two Henrys and the main stage production of The Crucible. In addition to performing at Salt Lake Acting Company and other Salt Lake City theatres, he is the co-founder and co-artistic director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and an assistant professor at the University of Utah.

SUSANNA FLORENCE returns to play Dorothy. Another PTC alum, she has appeared in the main stage productions of King Charles III, Fiddler on the Roof and One Man, Two Guvnors, as well as staged readings of i, Honor Killing, A March Tale and Speculator Spirits. Other Utah credits include productions with The Sting and Honey Company, Plan-B Theatre Company and the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

BRANDT GARBER plays Brian and is in the final year of the Actor Training Program at the University of Utah. This is his third Play-by-Play reading. Earlier this season, he understudied the role of Christopher in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

JESSE KLICK plays Toby and was most recently seen on the PTC stage in Newsies. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in musical theatre this December and has also appeared in productions of You Never Can Tell, Cats, The Full Monty and others.

Pioneer Theatre Company operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and Actors' Equity Association, the Union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States.
