ROLES FOR TOUCH(ED):
KAY: Mid-late twenties. Kay's entire life revolves around her mentally ill older sister, Emma. Saddled with the burden of always being "the normal one," Kay struggles to define herself, to maintain her optimism, and to cope with her feelings of anger towards her situation.Through it all, she possesses a fierce love for her sister, and an unwillingness to settle for the conventional medical wisdom that says that her sister will never recover.
EMMA: Approaching her thirtieth birthday, Emma struggles with a severe and difficult to diagnose mental illness (most likely schizophrenia). She has spent much of the past decade in a variety of mental institutions, and has attempted suicide numerous times. She once showed great promise as a poet, and briefly attended Princeton. Somewhere in the fog of illness and medication that has
overtaken her life lurks an intensely imaginative, bright and funny young woman.
BILLY: Pushing forty, but acts younger. Billy is part literary genius, part total fraud, part "stray dog." He is a well-known writer who has just experienced his first taste of failure, and is now struggling with acute writer's block. He is fascinated by Emma and her unique take on the world, and thinks that perhaps she can provide the spark that might reignite his own creative fire. He is willing to do anything to reestablish himself as the literary giant he feels he truly is.
DOCTOR: Forties (could also be older). By-the-book. Professional. Kind, but slightly burnt-out from years working at a mental hospital among patients who have little to no hope of recovery. He is a realist, who believes that Kay can most help herself - and her sister - by keeping her expectations for recovery low, and yet he has a deep reserve of empathy for Kay, and a very personal connection to her struggle.
