Pioneer Theatre Company announces its 2018-2019 staged concert production, La Cage aux Folles, winner of the Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score. Running for one weekend only, March 15 & 16, 2019.
Based on the play by the same name, the musical tells the story of partners Georges and Albin, who run the Saint-Tropex drag night club, where Albin is the star. When Georges' son announces his engagement to the daughter of a bigoted politician, comical chaos ensues.
The New York Daily News said of La Cage aux Folles: "Carry your maiden aunt off to La Cage aux Folles...It's a family show, a glittering, fast stepping extravaganza."
"One of the goals of our concert programming is to offer musicals that are not often produced in this community," said PTC Artistic Director Karen Azenberg. "It is exciting to introduce our audience to this work. In the case of La Cage, this Tony Award-winning musical written by Tony Award winners Jerry Herman (Hello, Dolly! and Mame) and Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray), even though the show is now more than 30 years old, it still speaks to every one of us. It is at once entertaining and a salute to family, albeit a nontraditional one. I think Jerry Herman put it best with the lyric to one of the classic tunes from La Cage - 'The Best of Times is Now.'"
PTC also announces the dates for the Play-by-Play new play reading series, Oct. 5 & 6, 2018, Jan. 25 & 26, 2019, and Apr. 19 & 20, 2019. The concert production and the Play-by-Play dates complete the add-ons for the 2018-2019 season.
The previously announced season includes the Regional Premiere of Oslo by J. T. Rogers; the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street; a sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley ;written by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon; The Lion in Winter, a fascinating look at the battle of wits between two legendary figures, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine; the charming musical love story Once; Sweat, the powerful and emotional 2017 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, written by Lynn Nottage; and everyone's favorite nostalgic throwback to the 1950s, the musical Grease.
