In a landmark discussion, and her first public ticketed event, Monica Lewinsky will speak at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center for Performing Arts. The evening is part of the Park City Institute's 20th Anniversary Main Stage Season. Lewinsky, who describes herself as "Patient Zero of Internet Shaming," gave a TED Talk on the subject that has been viewed over 11 million times. She will offer insights into navigating the digital age.
"Monica Lewinsky comes to our stage to help inform a generation of parents and kids how to tackle the 'empathy crisis,' of cyberbullying," said Teri Orr, executive director of Park City Institute. "She has two decades of scholarship on the topic, and a degree in psychology from the London School of Economics, that expand the conversation beyond her personal experience. We are honored to be the first to present Lewisnky in a public forum. Now, more than ever, her message is important for us to hear."
Lewinsky was, arguably, the first private citizen to leap, overnight, from private citizen to disgraced public figure, due to the expansive nature of the internet-centered news cycle. That journey, at the age of 24, gives her a unique perspective to provide insight into the painful realities of cyberbullying and online harassment, in the social media era. She will mix her own experiences of public shaming enhanced by the digital revolution, with ways to find compassion and empathy through social media.
