On Pitch Performing Arts opens "Les Miserables: School Edition" on July 26th! This iconic show is part of OPPA!'s theatre education program and is performed entirely by children 18 and under.
The musical "Les Miserables" is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel by the same name. Set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread in order to feed his sister's starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade.
"Les Miserables" won 8 Tony awards the year it premiered on Broadway. It was one of Broadway's longest running musicals, closing its initial Broadway run after 16 years. It has since received two revivals and numerous touring productions. The School Edition was developed to bring this engaging and challenging material into schools and performing institutions like OPPA!
