Hale Centre Theatre (HCT)'s highly-anticipated opening of the new Jewel Box Stage in the Mountain America Performing Arts Centre in Sandy City, took place Sept. 1 in conjunction with opening night of HCT's latest production, Forever Plaid. At the event, Hale Centre Theatre announced the name of the new, intimate, proscenium-thrust stage as the Sorenson Legacy Jewel Box Stage. Tickets for Forever Plaid, which runs through Nov. 14, are on sale now.
"We are very grateful to the Sorenson family and are honored to continue the legacy left by James L. and Beverley T. Sorenson at the Sorenson Legacy Jewel Box stage," said Sally Dietlein, HCT executive producer. "Friday marked the first-ever performance on Hale Centre Theatre's proscenium-thrust stage. Although this is a departure from Hale's famous theater-in-the-round, the family-fun and Broadway-level talent remains. Audiences are going to be absolutely delighted by the dancing and crooning of the Plaids on this gem of a stage."
The proscenium arch design of the new Sorenson Legacy Jewel Box Stage forms a window encompassing the scenery and performers. The stage thrusts out of the archway and extends into the audience, giving great views from any angle. The Sorenson Legacy Jewel Box Stage will be the only portion of the new Mountain America Performing Arts Centre open to the public attending performances, until the Nov. 17 grand opening featuring a production of Aida on the larger, world-class Centre Stage.
"This is such an exciting time for Utah's theater community," said Dietlein. "We are grateful for the community's support in helping build this magical performing arts center and in helping us provide innovative, professional family theater and theater education that involves and elevates our community."
